Kansas City Power & Light
Electric Utility
Western Missouri & Eastern Kansas
Summary

Kansas City Power & Light Company, a Kansas City-based electric utility company, was looking for a comprehensive listing of various confined space hazards at their multiple facilities around Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas. Faced with the daunting task of compiling confined space assessments manually and attempting to track known hazards on a clumsy spreadsheet they turned to OCCU-TEC for assistance.
The utility needed a mechanism to quickly assess known hazards and communicate these hazards to employees tasked with performing work in each of their confined spaces. OCCU-TEC assisted the company by performing baseline confined space assessments throughout their various facilities, establishing a database of identified spaces and associated hazards. OCCU-TEC then utilized AutoTrak™, (OCCU-TEC's proprietary online data management platform customized to the client's needs), to capture and track each confined space in a reasonable amount of time.
The data management system is now used to generate work order notifications informing employees of the hazards associated with each space and precautions necessary prior to entry.
By utilizing an secure online data management system the employee's are assured of the latest updates to the specific confined space at a click of the mouse. AutoTrak™ also allows KCP&L to populate and print the required permits and notify staff of required staffing and training needs (attendant, supervisor, rescuer, etc.).
OCCU-TEC's continued partnership with KCP&L has allowed the utility to reduce costs, and increase safety awareness throughout each of their facilities.
